Balea Lake

Balea Lake is a glacial lake situated at an altitude of 2,040 meters in the Fagaras Mountains, Sibiu County. Dimensions of the lake: 360 m in length, surface area of 46,508 square meters and depth of 11.35m. In 1932, Balea Lake and an area of about 180 hectars around the lake were declared a scientific reserve.
Balea Lake is about 77 km from the cities of Sibiu, Fagaras 68 km and 85 km from Curtea de Arges. In the summer, you can reach the region by car, on the Transfagarasan highway, and otherwise by cable car from Balea Waterfall near Balea waterfall.
In 2006, the first ice hotel in Eastern Europe was built at Balea lake in the form of an igloo with 16 habitable rooms.
